Detailed Design of New Landfill Cells and Clean/Contaminated Water Management Systems at Various Pikitup Landfill Sites, Gauteng, South Africa

Envitech was appointed as consultants for the detailed design, preparation of tender documentation and engineering construction supervision for extensions and upgrading at four Pikitup Johannesburg landfill sites – Ennerdale, Marie Louise, Goudkoppies and Robinson Deep Landfills. The appointment was for detailed design of new landfill cells and upgrading of the clean/contaminated water management systems, compilation of tender documentation (including project specifications) and limited engineering site supervision of construction works at each site.

Marie Louise Landfill Site

Key aspects of the project included:

  • Site investigations at each site (including groundwater borehole drilling and water quality testing) to establish the subsoil, geological and groundwater conditions at each site
  • Detailed design of the following at each site:
    • New landfill cells (including DTM to establish airspace volumes and anticipated site life) in accordance with the DWAF Minimum Requirements;
    • Separate clean and contaminated water drainage systems
    • Contaminated water evaporation pond (including HDPE geomembrane)
    • Existing side slope rehabilitation works
  • Preparation of tender documentation in accordance CIDB guidelines and General Conditions of Contract 2004/2010 as well as project specifications for construction
  • Engineering site supervision and contracts management for the civil engineering construction works at each site
