Intibane Open Cast Mine, Mpumalanga, South Africa Pollution control system

Envitech was appointed by Wescoal to carry out a geotechnical investigation, hydrogeological investigation, design and implementation of a pollution control system for a new greenfield open cast coal mine which included coal stockpile yards and pollution control dam. The design also included for clean and dirty water drainage systems.

Envitech was responsible for carrying out the required investigations and design of all the works. The key features of the project included:

  • Geotechnical investigation to determine underlying soil conditions, excavatability of the soils, availability of clay materials and any potential perched water tables.
  • Hydrogeological investigation to determine the underlying groundwater regime, existing groundwater quality and establishment of groundwater monitoring boreholes for long term monitoring.
  • Design of pollution control dam to store all contaminated water.
  • Design of stormwater runoff drainage system separating clean and dirty water systems.
  • Technical support for Water Use License Application process.
