Durban Landfill Gas-to-Electricity CDM Project

Installation, Operation & Management of Electricity Generation Plant at Bisasar Road Landfill

Envitech, as project managers in a consortium with Enviro-Fill (Pty) Ltd, was awarded the contract for the design, installation and commissioning of an electricity generation system at the Bisasar Road Landfill site in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The objective of this contract is to generate electricity to be supplied to the local Durban electricity distribution grid and thereby gain Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) in terms of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.

Key features of the project included:

  • Design and installation of engine oil storage facility with automatic pumping and handling systems
  • Design and installation of generation compound lighting, lightning protection and earthmat systems.
  • Supply and installation of four landfill gas engines/generators with total of 4MW capacity
  • Design and installation of 11KV switchgear and step up transformers for four generators
  • Incorporation of electricity generation plant into site SCADA system
  • Operations and maintenance of electricity generation plant after commissioning
