Envitech was appointed as lead consultants for the development of four new regional landfill sites. The new landfill sites were for the Blouberg, Aganang, Molemole and Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipalities. The existing four illegal sites were closed as part of the project. The appointment included for the co-ordination of the site selection, public participation, Environmental Impact assessment (EIA) and landfill permitting processes, all detailed design and supervision of construction work on the four landfill sites.

Key features of the project included:

• Strategic site selection and location of the new landfill sites within the municipalities’ areas of jurisdiction
• The closure and rehabilitation of four illegal landfill sites
• Development of the landfills within economic haul distance to ensure adequate disposal facilities in the respective communities
• GMB- classification – landfills will only accept general wastes
• Recycling and composting facilities provided for job creation
• Stormwater management, leachate collection and management system.
• Soil basal lining system using available soil materials on site
• Infrastructure includes administration building with ablutions, weighbridge system, composting yard and recycling yard and shed
