Envitech, as project managers in consortium with Enviro-Fill (Pty) Ltd, was awarded two contracts for the design, installation and commissioning of landfill gas extraction and flaring systems at the Simmer & Jack (Germiston), Weltevreden (Benoni) and Rooikraal (Boksburg) landfill sites near Johannesburg in Gauteng, South Africa.
The objective of these two contracts is to capture and destroy landfill gas thereby avoiding emissions of methane to the atmosphere and hence gain Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) in terms of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.
Key features of the project included:
- Installation of 96 landfill gas wells in the existing landfills
- Installation of more than 10,5 km of gas collector pipework
- Design and installation of one 1300m3/hr (SC1300), two 2000m3/hr (SC2000) and one 3000m3/hr (SC3000) high temperature gas flares (>10000C) supplied by Organics UK
- Design and installation of continuous gas monitoring system, including flow rates, temperature and gas quality
- Design and installation of electrical supply and backup generator systems to all sites
- Design and installation of SCADA system incorporating the gas extraction and flaring systems including continuous exhaust gas monitoring
- Operations and maintenance of landfill gas extraction and flaring systems for five years after commissioning, including CDM Project Management
