Envitech was awarded two separate contracts for the design, installation and commissioning of landfill gas extraction systems and electricity generation plants at the Mariannhill and La Mercy Landfill Sites near Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
The objective of these contracts is to generate electricity to be supplied to the local Durban electricity distribution grid and thereby gain Carbon Emission Reduction (CER) credits in terms of the Kyoto Protocol on climate change.
Key features of the project included:
- Installation of 28 landfill gas wells in the existing landfills
- Installation of more than 1,5 km of gas collector pipework
- Design and installation of two 1000 m3/hr high temperature gas flares (>10000C) supplied by Organics UK
- Design and installation of continuous gas monitoring system, including flow rates, temperature and gas quality
- Installation of two landfill gas engines/generators with 0.5MW and 1.0MW capacities, supplied by GE Jenbacher (Austria)
- Design and installation of 11KV switchgear and step up transformers to both sites
- Design and installation of SCADA system incorporating the gas extraction systems and electricity generation plants
- Operation and maintenance of landfill gas extraction systems and electricity generation plants
