Luipaardsvlei Landfill, Krugersdorp, Mogale City Landfill Gas Assessment and Pumping Trials

Envitech was appointed by Envirofill (Pty) Ltd., under the direction of the Mogale City Municipality, to carry out a landfill gas assessment at the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site in Krugersdorp. The objective was to establish the potential for future landfill gas generation at the site, with a view to developing a project under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol, entailing the productive use of the available gas and the sale of Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs). This is a relatively large landfill site which is currently being upgraded and developed into a potential regional landfill site by the Mogale City Municipality.

Key features of the project included:

  • Initial landfill gas sampling using surface probes in the existing landfill
  • Collection of historic and physical data on the landfill and data on waste streams
  • Development of a potential landfill gas generation model for the existing site and site extension
  • Establishment and implementation of a landfill gas pumping trial using a pump and flare station
  • Verification and adjustment of modelled future predictions based on the pumping trial results
  • Preliminary economic feasibility assessment based on the potential development of a CDM landfill gas-to-electricity project
