The Kupferberg Landfill serves as the only general and hazardous waste disposal site for the capital city of Namibia, Windhoek. The landfill receives waste comprising predominantly domestic, but also industrial/commercial and garden waste. In addition, there is an enclosed cell which receives Rating 3 and 4 hazardous waste. The landfill has been in operation since the early 1980s.
Envitech was appointed by the City of Windhoek to complete a landfill gas assessment through the execution of a pumping trial at the Kupferberg landfill site, with the aim of determining the suitability of developing the site into a fully functional Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The following tasks formed part of this appointment:
- Preparation and registration of a Project Identification Number (PIN) with the Designated National Authority (DNA) in Namibia
- Procurement and/or manufacture of materials, drilling and installation of four gas wells, pump and flaring station, gas collection pipe work and related electrical works
- The operation and monitoring of the landfill gas flaring unit for a period of six months
- Submission of a report on the results of the pumping trial compared with the theoretical assessment provided as part of an initial gas assessment report
- Recommendations on the way forward, including full financial modeling for different case scenarios.
