Moabsvelden Open Cast Coal Mine, Mpumalanga, South Africa Co-disposal discard dump and pollution control system

Envitech was appointed by Neosho Trading to carry out a geotechnical investigation, hydrogeological investigation, design and implementation of a pollution control system for a new greenfield open cast coal mine, coal processing plant, coal stockpile yards, co-disposal discard dump (2.5million m3), emergency coal slurry ponds and pollution control dam. The design also included for clean and dirty water drainage systems.

Envitech was responsible for carrying out the required investigations and design of all the works. The key features of the project included:

  • Geotechnical investigation to determine underlying soil conditions, excavatability of the soils, availability of clay materials and any potential perched water tables.
  • Hydrogeological investigation to determine the underlying groundwater regime, existing groundwater quality and establishment of groundwater monitoring boreholes for long term monitoring.
  • Design of coal co-disposal discard dump (2.5 million m3).
  • Design of processing plant and coal stockpile yards.
  • Design of pollution control dam to store all contaminated water for reuse in processing plant.
  • Design of stormwater runoff drainage system separating clean and dirty water systems.
  • Design of emergency coal slurry ponds as backup to slurry dewatering plant.
Technical support for Water Use License Application process.
