The Tsosane Landfill is a general waste landfill, serving the city of Maseru, Lesotho. The landfill is estimated to have been in operation since the early 1980’s, and it is not clear for how long the site will continue to receive waste in the future. The landfill receives various wastes comprising domestic, industrial/commercial, and green wastes. The site has a documented history of poor operation, during 2010 however, it was brought under control by Motse Miya Trading & Projects, working under contract to the Municipality. The site is located within an old quarry, and also within a residential suburb of Maseru; the northern and southern boundaries border directly onto residential properties.
Due to the close proximity to residential erven, as well as the fact that the site is unlined, a need was identified for landfill gas migration monitoring, as landfill gas poses a potential health and safety hazard. Envitech was appointed by Motse Miya Trading & Projects for the installation and regular monitoring of landfill gas probes.
Key features of the project include:
- Installation of surface probes in the existing landfill for monitoring landfill gas generation and quality
- Installation of perimeter soil probes around the boundary of the landfill for the purpose of landfill gas migration monitoring
- Regular monitoring of the surface and perimeter probes, trending and establishment of potential gas migration pathways
- Reporting on possible landfill gas management systems, including management of gas migration
- Providing landfill operations and management advice as part of a consultancy service.
