Envitech was appointed to carry out the Master Planning, rehabilitation of an existing cell and lining of a new cell at the UThungulu Regional Solid Waste Site in Empangeni, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The appointment included for the site life Master Plan, detailed design, tender adjudication and supervision for the rehabilitation and lining of the cells in accordance with the legislation.

Key features of the project included:

• A Master Plan, which included a site assessment, recommendations on staff training, landfill operations, Health and Safety, landfill monitoring, landfill gas extraction and waste recycling. The Master Plan also included lifespan assessments, 3-D modelling of the final waste body, estimated future costs for new cell developments and site rehabilitation, financial modelling and programming for the remainder of the site life.
• Closure and Rehabilitation Design of exiting cells
• Leachate management, stormwater management and upgrades to the current systems
• The design for the lining of a new cell (Class B)
• The design of ancillary works, which included litter control fences, telemetry systems, mobile ablution facilities, waste inspection cameras, odour control and gas monitoring probes
