Planning of Second Phase of the Delmas/Botleng Landfill Site (Class GMB-), Delmas Local Municipality South Africa

Envitech were appointed as consultants to carry out the planning, fieldwork, design and project management for the development of the second phase of the existing landfill site at Delmas/Botleng. The appointment included tracing of existing permit and design documentation, geotechnical and hydrogeological investigation for the new landfill cell, preliminary design and estimates of construction budgets.

Key features of the project included:

  • Review of the existing permit and gap analysis with respect to its requirements in terms of the second phase of the development
  • Geotechnical investigation and soil testing for classification with regard to availability of materials and their usage
  • Hydrogeological investigation comprising drilling of boreholes to establish groundwater conditions and enable subsequent groundwater quality monitoring
  • Desktop review of potential impacts and need for environmental impact assessment
  • Detailed topographical survey for the purpose of digital terrain modeling
  • Planning and design of the second phase of operation at the site in accordance with the Minimum Requirements for Disposal of Waste to Landfill (DWAF, 1998)
  • Preliminary infrastructure design including access road upgrade, site roads, stormwater control, site offices and weighbridge
  • Estimation of construction costs for the purpose of construction budgeting
