The Al-Ghabawi Landfill is owned by the Municipality of Greater Amman. The site is situated approximately 30 km East of Amman, near the Ghabawi residential district. It is a regional solid waste disposal site that will eventually comprise a total of 10 cells. Phase II involved the installation of a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) and a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane liner to the second cell – Cell 2.
The construction and lining of the second cell was awarded to a Joint Venture between Arabian Environmental Construction (AEC) and El-Issa & Naffa’ Engineering. Installation of the liner materials was carried out by AEC and Envitech was responsible for all construction quality assurance (CQA). The scope of work included monitoring and reporting on the installation of the GCL and HDPE geomembrane liners as well as co-signing quality assurance certificates provided by the contracting company.
The key features of the project included the following:
- Earthworks construction for the new solid waste landfill Cell 2
- Installation of 120 000m2 of HDPE geomembrane (including both smooth and “textured” HDPE) and GCL linings
- Compilation of a CQA plan in accordance with international standards
- Full-time supervision and CQA monitoring
- CQA materials testing – monitoring and verification
- Monitoring and supervision of electrical leak location survey
- CQA Completion Report and Certification
