In October 2004, Aljaber Engineering Co. was contracted by Overseas Bechtel Inc. to carry out the excavation and removal of some 6,5 million m3 of wastes from the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) site, on behalf of the NDIA Steering Committee. This was to be carried out over a period of 18 months. The site was previously used as a general dumping site for the State of Qatar, and extended into the sea, surrounded by earth berms. This introduced sensitive environmental issues to be dealt with during excavation of the waste, including the treatment and release of contaminated ground/sea water in accordance with environmentally acceptable standards.
Envitech was appointed by Aljaber Engineering Co. to perform the required environmental monitoring services during the waste excavation and removal contract. The key features of the project included the following:
- Excavation and removal of all wastes from the NDIA site (some 6,5 million m3) in Doha and placement at the Engineered Landfill Site at Mesaieed (40km south of Doha)
- Removal of stagnant contaminated water (some 135 000 m3) from northern lagoon and contaminated water from the “made ground” area
- Stockpiling of excavated waste until the Engineered Landfill was ready to receive waste materials
- Envitech Solutions supplied and operated all Environmental Monitoring equipment and software on the project, including an automated weather station, noise monitoring instruments, a dust analyser, a landfill gas analyser, water quality testing instruments, and ambient asbestos monitoring instruments.
- The project Environmental Management Plan (EMP) and all associated Method Statements and Procedure documentation was developed by Envitech Solutions prior to waste excavation
- Envitech Solutions was responsible for monitoring the contractor’s performance in accordance with the EMP throughout the waste excavation contract, 24 hrs/day, with staff on day and night shifts.
