Envitech was appointed by Enviro-fill Namibia (Pty) Ltd., under the direction of the City of Windhoek, to carry out a landfill gas assessment at the Kupferberg Landfill Site. The landfill receives various wastes comprising predominantly domestic, but also industrial/commercial and garden wastes, and also has an enclosed area which receives hazardous wastes of Rating 3 and 4.
The objective was to establish the potential for future landfill gas generation at the site, with a view to potentially developing a project under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol, entailing the productive use of the available gas and the sale of Certified Emissions Reductions (CERs).
Key features of the project included:
- Initial landfill gas sampling using surface probes in the existing landfill
- Collection of historic and physical data on the landfill and data on waste streams
- Development of a potential landfill gas generation model for the existing site and site extension using GasSim
- Preliminary economic feasibility assessment based on the potential development of a CDM landfill gas-to-electricity project
