The NDIA Engineered Landfill in Mesaieed was constructed to receive some 6,5 million m3 of wastes arising from the NDIA airport site in Doha. These wastes were excavated from the new airport site and transported some 40km south to the Engineered Landfill site.
The stringent lining specification for the Engineered Landfill called for the installation of a 2mm thick HDPE geomembrane and geofabric / sand protection layers comprising the overall lining system. A leachate collection system forming an integral part of the lining philosophy was also incorporated into the design.
Envitech was appointed by Arabian Environmental Construction to carry out the specified Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) services on the lining installation sub-contract.
The key features of the project included the following:
- Earthworks construction for the new solid waste landfill and lining sub-grade preparation
- Installation of a total of 1 000 000m2 of 2mm thick HDPE geomembrane
- Compilation of a CQA plan in accordance with the project specification and international standards
- On-site supervision and CQA monitoring
- CQA material testing – sampling, monitoring and verification
- Electric leak location testing
- CQA Completion Report
